As an Interaction Designer for Rankless I contributed to the development of a data discovery platform that allows users to explore the scientific contributions of thousands of universities and institutions without relying on traditional rankings. Rankless highlights the unique impact each university creates, based on specific themes and regional factors, offering a more nuanced view of scientific influence. By moving beyond the oversimplifications of conventional rankings, the platform helps users discover a deeper, more tailored understanding of academic contributions across the globe.

Let's look at a comparison between the University of Utah and the University of Vienna:
Two institutions that are similarly ranked in Shanghai but have a different geographical and thematic focus. The University of Utah excels in health professions and medicine, while the University of Vienna is known for its strengths in physics, astronomy and environmental sciences.


Their geographic impact also differs significantly:


Utah gets most of its citations from medical centres in the US, Canada and Israel, while Vienna gets many citations from technical institutes in Austria, Germany and Czechia. These subtle differences are easy to detect in Rankless, but are often overlooked in traditional rankings.
